Big changes are on the horizon after today’s review panel meeting in Newcastle. There's talk about making significant structural reforms very soon.
Before, they outlined the main issues the Scheme faces in their interim report.
But today, they strongly hinted at their upcoming recommendations.
Recent numbers released from the NDIS show that the scheme now has 600,000 participants, a significant blowout from the original figures.
So, what's being suggested?
Getting Rid of the 3-Tier System: The NDIA's current three-tier setup might be scrapped to be replaced with individualised support packages built on top of foundational support. The review panel also mentions having an inter-government arrangement to commit to the foundational support.
Improving Necessary Supports: The support considered reasonable and necessary has often been inconsistent, causing differences in funded plans from year to year. The changes could mean planning after setting the budget.
Rethinking Early Childhood Support: With more kids joining the scheme, a complete revaluation of early childhood support is on the table.
Market Reforms for Better Results: The Review is looking at changes to promote better results, improvement, and value. Payments based on results, rather than just paying for services, are being considered.
Addressing Workforce Challenges: The workforce is struggling, with pay not reflecting experience or qualifications. There might be a shift into separating education and training for workers that are cumulative and moves with them between employers, alongside the idea of certificate-style courses that focus on a particular area to hone proficiency.
Scrutinising Unregistered Providers: There will be a focus on unregistered providers through a system that oversees market quality and safeguards, covering both providers and the workforce.
Here at Lama Care will continue to monitor the news updates as they come through.
